NEW WAVES presents a hybrid trans-disciplinary event and exhibition exploring the intersection of art and the experiences of the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Featuring art, film and music, the project seeks to draw connections between creativity and accessibility, and will be held at KEPK Studio from 26th September - 9th October in Magan-djin (Brisbane).
The opening event will feature a preview screening of the short film SOME KIND OF BLUE written and directed by Rae Choi, a keynote speech by deaf culture and community advocate Sophie Li, and an immersive sound bath with music by local composer Brodie McAllister, a collaborative piece inspired by Rae’s lived experiences as a hard-of-hearing person.
The sound bath and speeches will also be Auslan interpreted, captioned and accessible by livestream where possible (the film will not be streamed). Food and drinks from Green Beacon and Unico Zelo will be available for purchase at the event.
The accompanying NEW WAVES visual art exhibition will run from Thursday 26th September - Wednesday 9th October and is open to the public for free.
KEPK is wheelchair accessible and car parking and public transport is readily available nearby.

This event will be held on stolen Yuggera and Turrbul land. We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of these lands and that sovereignty has never been ceded. The lands we now live, work, create and build community on are Aboriginal land.
